"Our Heritage Defines Who We Are" and "Voter Turnout"
(Note: UtahPolicy.com has invited Mike Winder and Kevin Fayles, two candidates for mayor of West Valley City to share their campaign experiences this year. To read earlier posts and biographies of the two candidates, see the Campaign Journal page.)
Kevin Fayles: Last week I took the night off from campaigning and attended the Kearns Community Dialogue on "Race and Diversity." This is the first in a series of planned Community Town Halls/Dialogues sponsored by the Kearns Community Mobilization Partnership in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice.
Mike Winder: The old adage that "the majority rules" isn't true. It's the majority that votes that rules. Historically, municipal primary elections have low voter turnouts, and last week's election was no exception. We saw West Jordan with a low of 6% and Bluffdale with a high of 25% turnout. West Valley's number, at 12.3%, was somewhere in the middle, but by our city's traditional standards it was very high.
