Reinstating the Food Tax

As state lawmakers stare down the barrel of an $850 million budget deficit for 2010, it’s crunch time as they struggle to find ways to fill the gap. 

One idea is reinstating the state portion of the sales tax on food, which was reduced in 2007. 

Our insiders are split down party lines on whether the Legislature should reinstate that tax to help balance the budget.  More than 2/3 of Republicans favor the move, while 4/5 of Democrats think it’s a bad idea.
