Six students from 4th and 7th grades in cities and towns throughout the state are receiving top honors and cash prizes for writing insightful essays about why they like their community.
They are among thousands of students who studied state history and municipal government and participated in the 17th annual essay contest sponsored by the Utah League of Cities and Towns.
Winners of the 2014 Essay Contest, “Why I Like My Community,” include students from Salt Lake City, Provo, Kanab, Moroni, Gunnison, and Brigham City. Each received an individual cash prize and a separate cash award was presented his or her school. The two first prize winners will also read their essays during the League’s Annual Convention, Friday, September 12, 2014 during a lunchtime presentation set for 12:00 pm at the Salt Lake City Sheraton, 500 South 150 West.

Mercy Smith, Rock Canyon Elementary, Provo, Utah
Second Prize
Olivia Larson, Moroni Elementary, Moroni, Utah
Third Prize
Isaac Hammond, Mountain View Elementary, Brigham City, Utah
7th Grade
First Prize
Christopher Clyne, J.E. Cosgriff Catholic School, Salt Lake City, Utah
Second Prize
Taylor Anderson, Gunnison Valley Middle School, Gunnison, Utah
Third Prize
Morgan Stewart, Kanab Middle School, Kanab, Utah
Winners of this year’s contest included unique observations in their essays about such things as the people in their community, the geographical beauty surrounding them, exciting events sponsored by their city or town, or the quality of life they enjoy.
Awards have been presented to each of the six students at their individual schools. The first prize winners each received a check for $100 and their school received $1000. The second prize winner received a $75 dollar check and $750 dollars for their school and third place winner received a check for $50 dollars and $500 for the school.
