Donald Trump’s support in Utah is apparently beginning to collapse. A new survey from Y2 Analytics finds Trump is tied with Clinton at 26% in Utah. Independent candidate Evan McMullin is statistically tied with the two major-party nominees at 22%.
The survey of likely voters finds Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson at 14%. Green Party nominee Jill Stein is at 1%. 3% named another candidate and 7% are undecided.
The survey was taken after a 2005 video surfaced of Trump bragging that he could grope women because he was rich. After the publication of that video, a number of Utah Republican leaders abandoned support for Trump, including Sen. Mike Lee, Gov. Gary Herbert and Rep. Jason Chaffetz.
51% of Utahns say Trump should drop out of the race for president. 55% said GOP leaders should withdraw their support for Trump, including 56% of Mormons.
The survey found 64% of Utahns said they had watched the video. Another 30% replied they had heard about the video.
The latest UtahPolicy.com survey from September found Trump with a 15-point lead over Clinton, 39-24%. McMullin was at 9%.
The new Y2 survey shows Trump’s support in Utah has completely collapsed since that time.
McMullin’s surge is largely fueled by voters who view both Trump and Clinton unfavorably. The polling data shows 48% of likely voters who have a negative view of Trump and Clinton are divided between McMullin and Johnson.
McMullin is also very popular with Mormon voters. Mormons prefer McMullin over Trump 33-28%. The polling memo suggests that McMullin is poised to make even more gains as his name ID in Utah rises.
The survey was conducted among 500 likely Utah voters from October 10-11, 2016. It has a margin of error +/- 4.38%.
