Congressional Black Caucus to discuss supporting impeachment for Trump; Mia Love won’t endorse that step

The leader of the influential Congressional Black Caucus says he wants the group to discuss whether or not to support efforts to impeach President Donald Trump. The group’s only Republican member, Rep. Mia Love, says she’s not on board with that attempt.

McClatchy reports that New Orleans Rep. Cedric Richmond, chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, says he’s upset with President Trump’s response after a deadly domestic terrorist attack in Charlottesville earlier this month, when the president asserted there was “blame on both sides” for the violence that erupted at a neo-Nazi and white supremacist rally. As a result, hewants the nation’s historically black colleges to cancel a planned meeting with the White House next month. He also plans to have the the 49-members of the group discuss whether they should back Democratic efforts to impeach Trump.

“You can make an argument based on pure competency and fitness to serve, and that’s the conversation the caucus will have,” Richmond told reporters in a conference call. The caucus includes 46 House Democrats, Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, and Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey.

“Am I concerned about high crimes and misdemeanors?” Richmond asked. “Absolutely. Am I concerned about this president’s fitness to serve? Absolutely.”

In an email statement to UtahPolicy.com, Love said, right now, she’s not leaning toward endorsing impeachment.

“Obviously, I do not share the sentiment that impeachment is warranted.  That said, I want to wait until the Black Congressional Caucus holds its next meeting to see what, if anything, is presented,” said Love.
