Utah school grades decline slightly in 2017

Mirroring a slight decrease in student scores from the Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence (SAGE) tests in language arts, mathematics and science released earlier this month, fewer Utah elementary schools earned grades of A or B this year.

There was, however, a slight uptick in Utah high schools earning a grade of A, according to results released today by the Utah State Board of Education.

Utah law requires schools be given a letter grade based on student proficiency and growth on SAGE tests and, in the case of high schools, ACT tests and graduation rates, and, in the case of elementary schools, a literacy test. The Utah Legislature did suspend school grading for one year; that will be in the 2017-18 school year.

“The Utah State Board of Education continues to look into the reasons behind student scores as well as school grades,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Sydnee Dickson. “We are working with our governing partners both in the state and school districts and charters to take steps to improve student achievement.”
