53% of Utahns say they disapprove of President Trump’s job performance

On the eve of President Donald Trump’s visit to Utah next week, it’s safe to say that Utah has still not morphed into Trump country.

A new UtahPolicy.com survey finds a slight majority of Utahns view President Trump’s job performance negatively.

The Dan Jones & Associates survey shows 53% of Utahns say they disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 45% approve.

Slightly more Utahns disapprove of Trump’s job performance than our last poll in September, which found a 50% disapproval rating.

Trump is coming to Utah to announce reductions in the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.

Trump’s approval rating in Utah has not moved in the year following the 2016 election when he carried Utah’s 6 Electoral Votes with 45.5% of the vote. These remarkably consistent numbers suggest two things. Trump’s base of support has not eroded in Utah, but he’s not growing his base either.

In other words, Trump still has not won over a majority of Utahns since the 2016 election.

Trump is much more popular among men in Utah than women. Half of the men in Utah approve of Trump’s job performance, but only 39% of women do.

The only age groups that give Trump a positive approval rating are Utahns over the age of 65.

  • 54% of millennial voters in Utah disapprove of Trump’s job performance.
  • 65% of Utahns between 25 and 34 years old disapprove of Trump’s job performance.
  • 60% of Utahns between 35 and 44 say they do not approve of Trump’s job performance.
  • 54% of those between 45 and 54 years old view Trump’s job performance negatively.
  • 50% of Utahns between 55 and 64 disapprove of the job Trump has done so far, while 48% approve.
  • 55% of those between 65 and 74 years old approve of Trump’s job performance.
  • 54% of those over 75 years old say they favor Trump’s job performance.

Trump is quite popular among Republicans, but Democrats and independent voters are not fans of the 45th president.

  • 68% of Utah Republicans say they approve of the job Trump is doing in the White House. Just 28% disapprove.
  • 96% of Utah Democrats say they disapprove of Trump’s performance, which is not shocking at all.
  • 59% of independent voters in Utah disapprove of Trump’s job performance.

The Dan Jones & Associates survey was conducted among 600 registered Utah voters from November 16-21, 2017. It has a margin of error of 4.0%.
