Romney tears into Trump for ‘sh*thole’ comments

Former GOP presidential nominee and likely U.S. Senate candidate from Utah Mitt Romney blasted President Donald Trump on Twitter Monday for the racist comments attributed to him last week.

Romney said “The poverty of an aspiring immigrant’s nation of origin is as irrelevant as their race. The sentiment attributed to POTUS is inconsistent w/America’s history and antithetical to American values. May our memory of Dr. King buoy our hope for unity, greatness, & ‘charity for all.'”

Romney has long been a strident critic of Trump. Last week Trump reportedly referred to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “sh*thole countries.”

Romney is reportedly close to announcing his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is retiring at the end of this term.

For his part, Trump has said he did not make those comments, tweeting that the quote was made up by Democrats. He also pushed back on claims that he’s a racist.
