Romney qualifies for primary ballot

Republican Mitt Romney has qualified for the GOP primary ballot. That means, no matter what happens at the Utah Republican convention next week, he cannot be eliminated by Republican delegates.

Romney reached the required 28,000 certified signatures on Tuesday afternoon. There really wasn’t much drama over whether Romney would make the ballot as elections officials said he turned in more than 43,000 signatures total.

Romney shocked many Utah political observers when his campaign decided to use volunteers to gather signatures to get on the ballot rather than using paid signature gatherers.

Romney is the only Republican candidate for Senate to submit signatures. The remaining candidates will battle to advance to the primary election at the GOP convention on April 21 at the Maverik Center in West Valley.
