Rep. Lynn Hemingway, D-Salt Lake City, announced on Thursday he is withdrawing from his re-election bid for his HD40 seat in 2018. He missed most of the 2018 legislative session because of his wife's illness.

Hemingway's wife was hospitalized in New York during the session, which was the cause of Hemingway's absence this year.

Hemingway retired from the legislature in 2014 but was selected by HD40 delegates in 2015 to replace former Rep. Justin Miller who resigned because of legal troubles.

Hemingway had filed to run for re-election, but his withdrawal leaves Democrat Stephanie Pitcher as the only other Democrat in the race. Republican Peter Kraus and Independent American Party candidate David Else are the other contenders to replace Hemingway.
