Becker Will Decide on Running for a Third Term After 2014 Election (Video)

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says he plans to sit down after the 2014 election and make a decision about whether he’s going to run for another term in that office.

“I don’t want to think about it, but I can’t help but think about it because people ask me every day,” says Becker. “I’ll probably sit down a couple of weeks after the election and decide whether I will run again or if there’s something else out there for me.”

At the end of this term Becker will have spent more than two decades in the public arena – 8 years as Salt Lake City Mayor, 11 in the Utah Legislature and a number in the Matheson administration. Becker first won office in 2007 and will be up again in 2015.

“I love doing this job and wouldn’t want to do it unless I had the drive of these last two terms.”

Asked whether he has a “checklist” of things he’ll use to make his decision, Becker flat-out says no.

“I don’t operate with the balance sheet approach,” he says. “I’ll make my decision based on how I feel and get a sense of the community. One of the nice things I’ve learned about this job is take the best information you can and move forward.”
