Love Leads Owens By 12-Points, Would Trail Matheson

Doug Owens (D) and Mia Love (R)

Republican Mia Love has a double-digit lead over Democrat Doug Owens in Utah’s 4th Congressional District.

A new Zions Bank/UtahPolicy.com opinion poll conducted by Dan Jones/Cicero Group shows Love with 44% and Owens with 32% support with less than three months to go until the election. 19% are undecided.

The survey, conducted August 7-9 among 443 likely voters in Utah’s 4th Congressional District has a margin of error of +/-4.64%.

Owens and Love are vying to replace Rep. Jim Matheson who announced his retirement late last year.

The survey suggests a contest between Love and Matheson would be another close one this time around. Right now, Matheson pulls 45% while Love is close behind with 39%. Matheson barely defeated Love in 2012 by just 768 votes.

The fact that this is Love’s second campaign means Love has much more name recognition than Owens. However, voters in the district seem to have already made up their mind about the Republican candidate. 48% of voters in the 4th District have a favorable impression of Love, while 43% have an unfavorable opinion of her.

Owens, on the other hand, is not well known to voters. Just 32% say they have a favorable impression of him while 15% have an unfavorable opinion. 54% told us they either have no opinion of Owens or have never heard of him.

An internal poll from the Owens campaign in July showed Owens trailing Love by 9 points – 50-41%.
