More than 8 out of 10 Utahns think police officers should be required to wear body cameras or other recording devices, but they're split over whether cops are too quick to use deadly or excessive force.
A new UtahPolicy.com poll conducted by Dan Jones and Associates finds 83% of Utahns want body cameras or other devices required for police officers to record their interactions with the public.
When asked about their attitudes toward use of force by police, our poll finds Utahns are split. 41% say police officers are too quick to use deadly force while 44% say they're not. Another 13% are neutral.
This finding comes in the wake of a deadly police shooting last month at a 7-11 in Salt Lake City. A Salt Lake City police officer shot and killed a 20-year old man in the parking lot of a convenience store. That officer was wearing a body camera and caught the incident on tape, but the recording has not yet been released.
In a related question, we found that Utahns are also split when it comes to worries about police brutality. 39% expressed some concern about law enforcement using excessive force while 33% say they're not too worried about that.
The poll was conducted August 26-28 among 406 likey voters in Utah with a margin of error +/- 4.9%.
