There are five African American women who are likely to be members of the next Congress, including Utah's Mia Love. If they all win, it will bring the number of African American women in Congress to 20, the most ever.
Politics365 notes the Congressional Black Caucus is set to swell to as many as 46 members, which includes 20 women.
The candidates who are likely to join the 114th Congress:
- (NJ-12) — Bonnie Watson Coleman is expected to win the seat of retiring Congressman Rush Holt in New Jersey.
- (NC-12) — In North Carolina, State Rep. Alma Adams is sure to win Mel Watt’s old seat.
- (VI) — Del. Donna Christensen will be the next Governor of the Virgin Islands and attorney Stacey Plaskett is expected to win.
- (MI-14) –In Michigan, Mayor Brenda Lawrence will win the seat of Rep. Gary Peters who is running for Senate.
- (UT-4) — In Utah, Republican Mia Love should win the seat of retiring Blue Dog Rep. Jim Matheson.
