Exclusive Poll: Utahns Favor Filing Suit Against the Federal Government Over Control of Public Lands

54% of Utahns think the state should file a lawsuit against the federal government in order to take control of federal lands within the state, while 56% oppose creation of a new national monument surrounding Greater Canyonlands.

The latest UtahPolicy.com poll conducted by Dan Jones and Associates finds a majority of Utahns would support the state filing suit against the federal government in order to win control of BLM managed lands.

That support drops a bit when it comes to filing suit over lands managed by the Forest Service. Just 51% would support that move, while 43% would be opposed.

There has been some speculation that President Obama is poised to use the Antiquities Act to create a new national monument surrounding the Canyonlands National Park. 56% of Utahns would oppose that move, with 42% saying they are "strongly' opposed. Only 37% would support the creation of the Greater Canyonlands National Monument.

Last month Gov. Gary Herbert said he won assurances from Interior Secretary Sally Jewell that there would be no new monument designation without consultation with stakeholders.
