Chaffetz Could Set a Utah Record on Tuesday

Rep. Jason Chaffetz already owns the record for largest margin of victory in a Utah Congressional race with two major-party candidates. He could best that number on Tuesday.

Our latest UtahPolicy.com poll shows Chaffetz has a 51-point lead over Democrat Brian Wonnacott. That's an impressive number, but it's 10 points lower than the largest margin of victory ever in a Utah Congressional race.

That honor belongs to Republican Chris Cannon who beat Independent American party candidate Will Christiansen in 1998 by 61 points. There was no Democrat on the ballot that year, and Cannon won 76.9% to 15.8%.

In 1982, Republican Howard Nielson beat independent candidate Hank Huish by 53.7%. Again, no Democrat was on the ballot that year, and Nielson prevailed by a 76.86% to 23.14% margin.

The largest margin of victory when two major party candidates were on the ballot was 2012, when Chaffetz beat Democrat Soren Simonson 76.6% to 23.4%.

Wonnacott is pulling just 19% in our poll.

It's safe to say Chaffetz is likely to win on Tuesday. The only question left is whether it will be a record-breaker.
