Democrats Name 3 Cities as Finalists to Host 2016 Convention

While Republicans have decided on Cleveland as the host of the 2016 GOP convention, Democrats are taking a little more time to pick a host city.

On Monday, the Democratic National Committee announced the three cities that are finalists for the 2016 convention – Philadelphia, New York and Columbus.

Roll Call reports Phoenix and Birmingham were knocked out of contention when party officials determined they would not be able to effectively host the event.

Since Democrats hold the White House, they get to hold their convention later than the Republicans. The GOP plans to hold their event in either June or July of 2016, while Democrats are targeting the weeks of July 18, July 25 or August 22.

"We’re thrilled to move to the next step of the selection process to determine where Democrats will come together to nominate the 45th President of the United States,” said Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the DNC.
