Utah fans are largely divided between just three local teams.
We asked Utah residents to pick just one team as their favorite. Not surprisingly, University of Utah football, Utah Jazz Basketball and BYU football were the top three. The Real Salt Lake soccer club was a distant fourth.
When asked which professional basketball team Utahns supported the most, the Utah Jazz were not surprisingly the top pick. The next most popular team is the Chicago Bulls.
There may not be much interest in next week's Super Bowl among Utahns based on their favorite professional teams. 21% said the Denver Broncos were their favorite, followed by the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers. Just 11% said their favorite teams were either the Seattle Seahawks or New England Patriots.
When asked which professional sports were most important to them, Utahns overwhelmingly picked professional basketball. 86% of Utahns ranked pro hoops as the most important sport to residents in the state. As for the other sports:
- 62% said professional football
- 59% named professional soccer
- 39% said professional baseball
- 24% picked professional hockey
The survey was conducted January 8-13, 2015 by Dan Jones and Associates among 402 Utah residents. It has a margin of error of +/- 5.0%.
