Poll: Majority of Utahns Disapprove of Obama, Congress, Supreme Court

When it comes to all branches of the federal government, Utahns are not happy. Our latest UtahPolicy.com poll finds residents of the Beehive State do not approve of the job performance of President Barack Obama, both houses of Congress and the Supreme Court.

Nearly 2/3rds of Utahns disapprove of President Barack Obama. That's not much of a shock, given that Utah is a solidly Republican state. Nearly half of all Utahns says they "strongly disapprove" of the job performance for President Obama. Just 34% of Utahns approve of Mr. Obama's performance.

– 92% of Utah Republicans have a negative view of Obama's job performance.
– 56% of independent voters view Obama's job performance negatively
– 94% of Utah Democrats view Obama's job performance in a positive light

Utahns also aren't fans of the job Congress is doing. 59% of Utahns disapprove of the U.S. Senate while 53% say they don't like the job the U.S. House is doing.

– Independent voters have the highest disapproval rate for Congress. 71% of this group have a negative view of both houses in Washington.
– 55% of Utah Republicans approve of the job the U.S. House is doing while they are split on the job performance of the Senate, with 50% disapproving and 47% expressing approval.
– 64% of Utah Democrats disapprove of the Senate, and 61% disapprove of the job performance of the House.

Just over half of Utahns (54%) disapprove of the job performance of the United States Supreme Court. That number seems low considering the Justices upheld some key provisions of the Affordable Care Act and made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states, two decisions that most Utahns probably wished went the opposite way.

– 71% of Republicans disapprove of the Supreme Court.
– Independent voters are divided on the question, with 48% approving and 49% registering disapproval.
– Nearly 8 in 10 Utah Democrats (78%) say they have a favorable view of the Supreme Court.

The survey was conducted for UtahPolicy.com by Dan Jones and Associates from July 14-21, 2015. 610 adult Utahns were contacted via telephone and online means. It has a margin of error +/- 3.97%.
