Utah’s 2nd District Fundraising is Surprisingly Competitive

Early fundraising numbers from Utah’s 2nd Congressional district suggest Democrat Luz Robles might be set to give Republican Chris Stewart a run for his money.

Robles campaign spokesperson German Trejo tells Utah Policy they raised a little more than $50,000 in the three weeks since Robles announced her campaign for Congress. The campaign has spent about $7,000 leaving them with about $43,000 on hand.

Previously, Robles said she hopes to raise $1 million for the campaign, an ambitious sum indeed.

“We are averaging about $16,000 per week,” Trejo told Utah Policy. “If we keep up that pace, it will get us close to our goal of $1 million by the 2014 election.”

The Robles campaign report was not available online as of press time. Trejo says they filed their report via fax and the FEC database was not updated during the government shutdown.

Stewart reported pulling in $59,000 during the most recent period, leaving him with $97,000 on hand.

Stewart campaign manager Ryan McCoy seriously doubts this race is going to cost a million bucks. He pegs the total close to half that, close to what Stewart was able to raise and spend in 2012.

“We’re going to raise as much money as we can. If we have a well-funded opponent, that will attract more attention to this race. We are going to be able to keep pace financially.”
