UVU Museum of Art presents ‘Through the Eyes of a Child’ exhibit

Artist and sculptor Dennis Smith will showcase his thought-provoking artwork at the UVU Museum of Art at Lakemount from now to October 12. Smith’s exhibition, titled “Through The Eyes of a Child,” uses an impressionistic style to depict families, mothers, and children with the exuberance and hope of youth.

According to the exhibit, “To Dennis, the child is a metaphor for life. Children’s lives, as they explore the world around them, parallel our experience as adults as we discover our identity in this universe.

“While his figurative bronze sculptures capture the human spirit and innocence of childhood, his loosely depicted suburban landscapes reflect his Utah surroundings through a youthful perspective. With vibrant colors and expressive lines, his paintings detail possible adventures and opportunities to learn from what is around us, suggesting hope, optimism, and excitement for what is to come.”

Born and raised in Alpine, Utah, Smith earned a BFA from Brigham Young University and further honed his skills at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen, Denmark. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and his sculptures and paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections.

Notable commissions include the American Embassies in Moscow, London, and Prague; the LDS Monument to Women in Nauvoo, Illinois; and Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Smith also served as a member of the Utah Arts Council Board of Directors from 1979 to 1988.

Admission to the exhibit is free. For more information about the UVU Museum of Art, visit uvu.edu/museum.
