Name: Rep. Carl Wimmer, District 52 (Herriman, Riverton, South Jordan)
Occupation: Former Police officer. Current owner of a bodyguard/self-defense company. I also manage a large landscaping company.
Education: Graduated Granger High School. Attended college, but became a Police officer prior to getting my degree.
Growing up: I grew up in West Valley City. I had a wonderful and very adventurous childhood, some times a little too adventurous and I got into a couple scraps. I became a Golden Gloves fighter as a child and boxed until adulthood. I grew up in the same neighborhood as my wife Sherry, we met when I was in 4th grade and she was in 2nd.
Fond memory: When I got my first car. A 1979 Chevy Impala. My best buddy Tim (now my Brother in law Tim) and I jumped that car over a canal in West Valley City three or four times one evening. The cops were called, but we had quietly disappeared by then. We are lucky we were not killed.
Childhood ambition: I wanted to be two things: A professional fighter and a Police Officer. Although I was good at fighting, to make it as a successful professional took more than I had. I had always wanted to be a cop and entered the police academy at age 20.
Family: My family is my heart and soul. I have the greatest wife in the world, and three beautiful kids; Jade, Heston and Reagan.
Why politics: I am still trying to figure that out myself.
My perfect day: I try to make every day the perfect day. It does not always work, in fact it never does. But at least by trying, my days are always decent. The one provision is that the day MUST include being with my family or it is definitely not perfect.
Hobbies: I still like to fight. I practice and train when I can. I spar, wrestle and box when I can; mostly for fun. My main Hobby (more of an obsession) right now is powerlifting. I have won three world titles in the bench press with a personal best of 554 lbs in competition. I have actually bench pressed over 580 lbs in the gym before, but we Powerlifters are an odd bunch and we do not count the lift unless it is judged by three officials.
First job: I was a "trap boy" at the Lee Kay Center at age 12. I was the kid who pushed the button when the shooters would yell "PULL!" Thus sending the clay pigeon flying in the air.
Current motivations/ambitions: My top goal is of course family related. I want to raise my children successfully with my wife. I want to see The Patrick Henry Caucus become a nation-wide success, and we are well on our way to that goal. More selfishly speaking my goals are to bench press 600 lbs and to open a gym in the next year.
Lesson taught me by my mother: Stand up for what you believe, but be respectful.
Hottest issue I'm watching: States Rights.
Biggest challenge: A federal government that long ago discarded the rule of law and the constitution. The federal government was NEVER meant to be as big and powerful as it has become. Our founders would be rolling in their graves if they saw what we have allowed to become of the federal system.
Biggest accomplishment: Personally: My family, and my activity in my church. I was not always a church going person, and in fact was quite the opposite. It is indeed a true accomplishment for me to be active in organized religion today.
Politically: The Passage of Jessica's Law and the passage of The Secret Ballot Constitutional Amendment.
Alarm clock: My blackberry alarm.
Proudest moment: Individually the times that my children were born. Nothing compares.
My philosophy of government: Government is there to protect our God-given rights, not grant them or take them away. Government should not be in the business of redistributing dollars from one segment to another in the name of compassion. Forced charity is not charity at all.
Why my political party: The Republican Platform stands for the things I believe. Smaller government, more freedom and liberty.
Soundtrack: I love Contemporary Christian music (Casting Crowns, MercyMe and others). I listen to very hard rock when lifting or working out.
Personal motto/mission statement: I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength-Phil 4:13
Most embarrassing moment: I don't get embarrassed easily
Inspiration: Jesus Christ, my wife, my children, and my parents.
Retreat: Mountains and lakes
Favorite book: Tough one, I have a lot: The Art of War, On Combat, The Law, The Making of America, On killing, Atlas Shrugged, The Power of Positive thinking.
Favorite movie: I have a lot here too: Blackhawk Down, Gladiator, The Rocky series, The Patriot, The Passion of The Christ.
Favorite web site: www.Wimmer52.com
Indulgence, guilty pleasure: Dr. Pepper
Mentors: My Father
I admire most in the world: My dear wife. She is such a great mother and wife. She is my hero.
I'd fix the problems of the world by: Following the Constitution as it was intended.
A small insight into my psyche: Hmm, do I really want to reveal this? I am kind and gentle most the time, however, I have a spark-temper, especially if someone is trying to intimidate or pressure me. I do not play well in the sandbox with other alpha-males who try to test me. That has always been my one big weakness. I wont be pushed.
My district is cool because: It is the most conservative district in Salt Lake County.
I like serving in the Legislature because: I enjoy the people, and being able to see the affect of my work in every day lives.
Running for political office is: A 24/7/365 job. I am always in campaign mode, always. If I am defeated during an election campaign, it will not be due to being out worked.
Historical figure I'd like to take to lunch: Jesus Christ
Sports team: Everybody sing: "Miami has the Dolphins the greatest football team! We take the ball from goal to goal like no ones ever seen. We're in the air, we're on the ground were always in control....." OK, I'm obsessed with the Miami Dolphins...
I always carry in my pocket: I think everyone already knows this.
My desk is: Messy, but works for me.
Biggest issues ahead in 2010 session: States Rights
