WASHINGTON, D.C.--Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah), ranking Republican of the Senate Rules Committee, made the following statement Thursday regarding the Supreme Court's ruling on the Citizens United case:
"Today's ruling vindicates my long fight on behalf of free speech in the political arena, and I am pleased this fundamental truth has been recognized and honored. The First Amendment guarantees the right to free and unfettered expression of political views and beliefs, and that right cannot be rescinded by the Congress. The Supreme Court's ruling confirms what those of us who have opposed political speech restrictions have always known and long argued: Our Constitution does not allow the government to limit the ability of our citizens to speak out on issues that concern them."
