Sen. Lyle Hillyard posts a report on the recent Council of State Governments conference he attended in Hawaii, during which he met with lawmakers from other western states to discuss such issues as health care, economic development, fiscal management, and education.
Attending these conferences do make me a better legislator and help me serve the people better. In past years, we might attend more than one conference, but due to the considerable budget cuts we placed on ourselves, the state budget will only pay for us to attend one conference. Different legislators choose to go to different conferences, but if we go to more than one, we must pay for the additional one ourselves. I could pay for it from my campaign account, but I have not decided if I will. (I don’t feel comfortable asking people for money and when I do in Logan, they all laugh at me and say I don’t need to campaign because it is a sure way to lose.)
