A Utah gun rights group wants the selection committee for the next University of Utah President to include support for weapons on campus as one of their criteria. Do you think this should be a requirement for the position?
The State Legislature should do their job, say yeah or nay to guns on campus, and take it out of the hands of academicians. Having been a campus cop, I know the ban won't stop bad guys from bringing them on campus. In fact it encourages them because it makes their victims easy pray.
Absurd and inappropriate.
I do think a doctrinaire opponent to guns on campus ought to be rejected. As a faculty member in the state higher education system, I hope at least some of my students are armed.
Duhh!
Will the "village idiot choir" have a representative, as well?
You have got to be kidding...
Not just no, but "hell no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" When are some Utahns going to stop focusing on that which doesn't matter. We need to the University of Utah producing high-quality engineers, lawyers, doctors and business people. The focus of the next University of Utah President should focus on producing high-quality graduates.
Any candidate for the position of President of the University will need many qualifications, but their personal views on controversial issues should not be the main criteria in the selection process.
I'm more interested in someone who will improve quality and reduce costs for students and taxpayers.
Ridiculous litmus test.
Only in Utah could you expect something this silly.
Not just no, but hell no. How could anybody think this is a legitimate criteria for selecting the president of a University? Are we really that jacked up as a community?
What's next? The U's new President can't believe in evolution? How about gravity?
That has to be the most ludicrous litmus test for an academic position I have ever heard of.
Yes, to do otherwise is not to support Utah law and the U.S. Constitution; furthermore, prohibiting concealed firearms intended for self-defense is an infringement on the public safety and a financial liability to the taxpayers. For example, if a young female student left her concealed firearm at home because of a University policy and then was assaulted on campus, the taxpayers would end up paying for the legal settlement.
Are you kidding! How many other litmus tests are we going to entertain? Will the "Survivors of Alien Abductions Support Group" also be allowed to add a clause that future presidents of the U believe in alien abduction. It is their constitutional right to believe in it after all!
If the gun rights zealots had left any doubt in people's minds about out their nuttiness it was just erased!
You have got to be fricking kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
