Sen. Orrin Hatch says he thinks Republicans will grab control of the Senate, but possibly by just one seat.
Politico's David Catanese reports Hatch expects control of the Senate will come down to a dozen races.
"I think we can get the Senate, but I think it's going to be probably by a 1-vote margin," he said in response to a question from a GOP delegate here. "We're going to have to do everything right to get it."
Republicans need to pick up four seats to capture the majority if President Obama is reelected, a goal Hatch conceded "will be tougher" if likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney is unsuccessful this fall.
In an interview later, Hatch clarified his remarks to say the one-vote margin obviously isn't the ideal outcome.
"We would be happy if it's just a one vote margin, but we'd be a lot happier if we could get all nine of the Democrat seats that are really vulnerable and not lose any of ours. It's apparent we're not going to get all nine, but if all we get is four, that still gets us the majority," he said.
