Republicans, Democrats and our readers overwhelmingly think the battle for the GOP nomination for Salt Lake County Mayor will go to a primary election, with Mike Winder and Richard Snelgrove being the favorites to face off in that contest.

On the Democratic side, most Democrats and half of Republicans expect Ben McAdams to win the Democratic nomination at convention.

There are six Republican candidates for Salt Lake County Mayor. What do you think is the most likely outcome from the Salt Lake County Republican convention?

Republican insiders Democratic insiders UtahPolicy.com readers
Merrill Cook wins the nomination outright 0% 4% 2%
Mark Crockett wins the nomination outright 2% 4% 5%
Larry Decker wins the nomination outright 0% 4% 0%
Gary Ott wins the nomination outright 0% 0% 0%
Richard Snelgrove wins the nomination outright 5% 11% 9%
Mike Winder wins the nomination outright 12% 0% 16%
The nomination will go to a primary election 81% 77% 67%

Some anonymous comments:

"I'm enjoying the image of the battle of the dairy boys--Snelgrove and Winder--in a primary. So very wholesome."

"Winder will be haunted by the ghost of Richard Burwash."

"(Winder) may not be the best candidate, but his name recognition is a lot higher and he's a smooth-talker."

"There are a number of reasonable candidates in the race. So unless one of those guys has $4 million to spend and Dave Hansen as a campaign manager, I think it's going to a primary."

If the GOP race for Salt Lake County Mayor goes to a primary, who are the two likeliest candidates to advance?

Republican insiders Democratic insiders UtahPolicy.com readers
Merrill Cook 2% 15% 11%
Mark Crockett 48% 35% 26%
Larry Decker 0% 4% 11%
Gary Ott 4% 4% 7%
Richard Snelgrove 61% 69% 63%
Mike Winder 82% 65% 78%

Some anonymous comments:

"As much as Merrill Cook would love to go 2 for 50 at winning an office, I don't think Salt Lake will see that happen."

"Cook and Decker don't have a chance. They are just wasting everyone's time."

"Richard Burwash will be a write-in, I gather."

What do you think is the most likely outcome from the Salt Lake County Democratic convention?

Republican insiders Democratic insiders UtahPolicy.com readers
Ben McAdams wins the nomination outright 46% 56% 44%
Ross Romero wins the nomination outright 4% 4% 33%
The nomination will go to a primary election 50% 41% 23%

Some anonymous comments:

"McAdams has too much star power. Sorry Ross."

"This is the dumbest thing the Dems have done in a long time. It reminds me of the Rocky Anderson primary for Congress."

"McAdams is more electable, but either candidate will have a hard time this year with Romney at the top of the Utah/Salt Lake County ticket."

"It is possible Ben McAdams could win it outright, but that would be quite an accomplishment against Ross Romero."

"It will go to a primary but Ben McAdams is really appealing to both Democrats and Republicans. He'll be tough to beat."

"Romero is the past. McAdams is the future."

"Ross Romero has never been well liked at the legislature and his message is not exciting. Ben brings enthusiasm to the nomination and will win at convention."

"Finally, the Democrats have two good candidates in one race. Normally they can't even get one good candidate. It will be great to see them duke it out inside their party like the Republicans normally do."

No, that is how it went down. Keep throwing up red herrings. I shouldn't say it is classic KKK racism but this entire race and the political machinations are those of people not comfortable with race and religion. Can you imagine that in Utah???? If you think doesn't play a race in this you are____ I can imagine the discomfort of the party machine having to go to the barrios to canvas for votes. It is much more comfortable to appeal to the Mormons who look and think like you. You might be naive but don't assume I am.

Since there are no policy differences between the two I will go with Ross because of character. McAdams has no character after the way he back stabbed Ross for his self-interest. Because of redistricting Ben goes to the caucus and says we are going to lose a seat. Anyone not want to run again? No one, including Ben raised his hand, so Ross says he is going to give up seat to run for county mayor. Then Ben changes his mind after redistricting...NO CLASS or ethics!

^^ That is not at all how it happened. I don't know what the Romero campaign has been feeding you, but everyone knows Ben never said he wasn't going to run. Ben just didn't want to announce against his friend Nicole Dunn, the current Deputy Mayor under Corroon, but when she said she wasn't going to run, Ben jumped in the race. Ross gave up his seat in redistricting for political favors, in other words, basically saying I'll give up my seat for the County Mayor's race nomination, which isn't his seat to give up! It's the people's seat, and he just gave it up. And suddenly now that he is loosing he is saying "whoa is me, I'm going to be out of the job if I loose the nomination..." That's not "class" or "ethical." Sounds to me like Ross has been feeding people a lot of bull about how this went down.

Shame on Democrats supporting McAdams over Ross. It is called racism plain and simple and incredibly shortsighted!

Shame on Democrats for supporting one Democrat over another? How is this at all "racism"? Seems to me that you are being "shortsighted" if you think you have to vote for someone simply based on their race. It is a delegate race, this is how it's done. What about any of this is racist?

PS. I saw how Ben ran the local caucuses and it was not honorable but was a capable machine. In my caucus I am sure we were the only people who lived in the district. My favorite story from the caucus was an avowed McAddams delegate who said she is "tired of people not speaking English" In addition the covy of Mormon dressed men who stood in the back of the room orchestrated people to move to caucus tables confirms my suspicions.
