Real Women Run will be offering a follow-up training for women running for office on May 19th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The training is designed to offer valuable information for women throughout Utah who have already declared their candidacy this year for political office and their campaign staff. Candidates for school boards as well as those who attended Real Women Run’s training in January are also invited.
The training will feature breakout sessions on campaign fund raising and field operations as well as information on personal messaging and an “ask the expert” session to address individual questions. Experts will be current and past female politicians and campaign staff.
According to the US Census Bureau's 2010 data 49.8% of the population in the state is female. Yet in 2012, the proportion of women in the Utah State Legislature was just 17.3% with 5 Senators and 13 Representatives. Statistics show that women running for office win elections at the same rate as men, but nationwide fewer women choose to take the initial step to run for office.
Real Women Run is a collaborative nonpartisan effort to empower women to participate fully in public life and leadership through elected political office at all levels, political appointments, working on campaigns, or simply learning more about our political system. Headed by the YWCA Salt Lake City and The Hinckley Institute of Politics, the partnership includes Salt Lake Community College, Vision 2020, representatives from all political parties in Utah, League of Women Voters, AAUW, current and former elected female officials, and other community organizations who support women’s full participation in public life.
The first training offered by Real Women Run on January 14th at Salt Lake Community College drew hundreds of women interesting in learning more about running for political office. The May 19th event is free and lunch will be provided. To register visit www.realwomenrun.org
