Club for Growth Says Hatch Likely to Win

This is bad news for Dan Liljenquist. The Club for Growth says Orrin Hatch is likely to win the primary in June and they won't jump into the race with outside expenditures.

Politico talks with Club president Chris Chocola, who says they won't make any outside expenditures ahead of June's election.

If the Club stays out of Utah, it would be the glaring exception this cycle.

The organization has played in every other major GOP Senate primary this year, spending more than $1.5 million on advertising in Indiana against Sen. Dick Lugar, $700,000 in Nebraska against Attorney General Jon Bruning and more than $2 million on next week’s contest in Texas. Lugar and Bruning both lost, but the Club’s preferred candidate in Nebraska, state Treasurer Don Steberg, finished third.

“Hatch has voted to the right of Jim DeMint. There’s a ripple effect to what we do. I would say Hatch may be one of the best examples. Now, whether he’ll maintain that after he’s reelected, I don’t know, we’ll see. But there [are] few people in America that have worked harder to keep their job than Orrin Hatch has,” Chocola said.

“We’re not satisfied with Hatch, because I’m not convinced he’ll maintain his 100 percent record with us.”
