Allegations Swallow was the subject of a federal investigation, followed by another attack ad claiming Reyes is guilty of fundraising shenanigans. Shadowy outside organizations stepping in.
This is what I thought would happen in the U.S. Senate race between Orrin Hatch and Dan Liljenquist. When politics is played as a full-contact sport, it’s much more fun (for those on the outside, at least).
I only wish we had another few weeks before the election to let this feud simmer.
2. I think Mia Love gets how the media game is played.
I reported last month that Rep. Paul Ryan was coming to Utah to raise money for Love. Love’s campaign didn’t want to comment on the story since a definite date hadn’t been set. I would say the exchange with her people was a little testy as they were not happy the story was getting out.
Fast-forward to last week. Love called me personally to say that Ryan would be in Park City this coming Friday for a fundraising event. Most of the time the campaign would call another reporter to give them first crack at the story or just send out a blanket press release. It was quite refreshing to have a candidate who is getting plenty of national attention call a lowly local reporter to follow up.
Well played, indeed.
3. I think I was a little shocked to find out that Utah has fielded a Republican and Democratic candidate in every Congressional contest only dating back to 2000.
This study by Smart Politics says Utah’s streak of both major parties fielding a Congressional candidate is only the 16th longest in the country. That’s just 18 contests, which is pretty bad - but not as bad as some other states. However, New Hampshire has a 156-year streak with both candidates.
You might remember, in 1998 Democrats failed to field a candidate in Utah’s 3rd Congressional District. That year Republican Chris Cannon was challenged by Libertarian Kitty Burton and independent Will Christensen.
4. I think John Dougall’s media campaign is one of the best things to happen to Utah politics in a long time.
Look at these and tell me you aren’t entertained. Extra bonus points for using the Ryan Gosling meme and referencing bacon!
If he loses next week, he may have a future with an advertising agency. Seriously.
5. I think HBO’s Veep is one of the best political TV shows to come along in a very long time.
You can have your West Wing. Veep amazingly captures the backstabbing and atmosphere in modern politics. The scheming. None of the characters trust each other, and everybody is looking to advance their career no matter what.
Probably the best character is Tony Hale as Gary Walsh, the VP’s “body man.” He’s the only person in the office who really cares about the Vice President. His subtle mannerisms in his portrayal of the indispensible political aid is absolutely hilarious.
