The Daily reports that Matheson is the seventh vulnerable Democrat to announce they were skipping the convention.
"I'll be spending my time this summer and fall doing my job in Congress and visiting with and listening to people in Utah," Matheson said. "I won't be traveling to North Carolina."
Matheson's decision to skip the Democratic National Convention now makes at least seven prominent officials who are opting out, after The Daily reported yesterday that New York Reps. Kathy Hochul and Bill Owens will also stay home.
For Democrats in conservative-leaning districts and states, skipping President Obama's re-nomination party is an easy way to claim some independence and distance from the president.
The other Democrats who have said they're not going are Pennsylvania Rep. Mark Critz, West Virginia Gov. Early Ray Tomblin, West Virginia Sen. Joe Machin and West Virginia Rep. Nick Rahall.
