The margin of victory for Mark Crockett over Mike Winder in the race for the GOP nomination for Salt Lake County Mayor was just over 1,000 votes. That diference is even more stark when you consider 2,300 Republicans who hit the polls didn't bother to cast a ballot in that race.

A Utah Policy analysis finds that nearly 3% of the Salt Lake County Republicans who voted in the Presidential primary did not cast a ballot in the Salt Lake County Mayor's contest.

78,131 votes were cast in the presidential primary, but only 75,755 in the contest between Crockett and Winder, which Crockett won by just over 1,000 votes. It's not a sure thing that these undervotes would have changed the outcome, but it is significant that the number of voters who failed to cast a ballot was more than double the winning margin.

GOP Presidential Primary (Salt Lake County)
Mitt Romney 71,816
Ron Paul 4,275
Rick Santorum 1,209
Newt Gingrich 430
Fred Karger 301
Total 78,131

Salt Lake County Mayor Republican Primary
Mark Crockett 38,387
Mike Winder 37,368
Total 75,755
