Reports Politico:
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) sponsored the legislation after a 2009 IRS report found that a combined total of more than $1.5 billion in overdue taxes was owed by 184,000 federal employees. Chaffetz said the bill was necessary to make sure that employees who were receiving their salaries from taxpayers were not getting out of paying their taxes.
“We’re not trying to cut somebody off at the knees if they’re trying to do the right thing,” Chaffetz said on the floor before the vote. “We have an obligation to the American taxpayers and to the majority who are doing the right thing.”
