Former BYU Coed Says Jim Lehrer Should Ambush Romney about His Religious Beliefs In First Presidential Debate

In a piece for The Daily Beast, Stacey Solie, a Seattle journalist currently writing a book about "coming of age while attending Brigham Young University," says Jim Lehrer should ask Mitt Romney why the Mormon Church treats women "as second-class citizens."

It’s a question Mike Wallace asked the president of the Mormon church (and prophet, seer, and revelator) Gordon B. Hinckley in 1996, and Larry King asked him again in 2004. Barbara Walters even thought it was important enough to ask 19-year-old Marie Osmond in 1978—and moderator Jim Lehrer should ask Mitt Romney Wednesday, at the year’s first presidential debate:

Why do Mormons continue to treat women of the faith as second-class citizens?

The indictment in brief: women are not allowed to serve in the priesthood, which includes virtually all Mormon males ages 12 and up, giving them the right to act and speak with God’s authority. Women are thus forbidden from administering blessings, performing baptisms, or presiding over men in meetings or at home. And women are also excluded from the church’s upper leadership positions. Even those women who rise to positions of authority within the all-female Relief Society and Young Women organization, or as teachers, still answer to priesthood-holding men.

What I want to know is why any woman can get a temple recommend and a man is required to have the priesthood? Why are men so discriminated against?

Not any woman can get a temple recommend, they have to be worthy of it, and even when that woman has a recommend she will not be able to enter heaven without a man who holds the priesthood. Why are woman so discriminated against?

@jahniking

A woman can get into heaven without a man, since heaven is synonymous with the Kingdom of God which includes the Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial kingdoms.

It is true that a woman needs a husband to be exalted, but guess what: a man needs a wife to be exalted as well. Therefore, no discrimination exists.

@Ianhel

a woman can get to the spirit world but it is not heaven. According to the Mormon belief there's a few steps before getting to heaven. After the spirit world is resurrection, which you mentioned, then there's a final judgement by Joseph Smith (Mormon God) which he will tell you what level you earned to stay in: celestial, terrestrial, telestial or outer darkness. If you reached celestial level then you become an eternal mother? oh no wait, there's other levels to becoming an eternal mother, right? idk, please enlighten me?

@jahniking

I am specifically talking post spirit world and resurrection. The telestial, terrestrial, and celestial kingdoms are all considered part of heaven (D&C 76).

Exaltation is only one part of three in the celestial kingdom and the requirement to enter there is the new and everlasting covenant of marriage. Both MEN and WOMEN are required to enter into that covenant to obtain exaltation (D&C 131). In fact men are required to do more than women to obtain exaltation.

Joseph Smith is not the "Mormon God". He also has no say in the judgment as to which kingdom someone is sent: "...where God and Christ are the judge of all (D&C 76:68)".

I would say at this point that this is not the appropriate forum for these discussions. If you would like to meet in person then tweet me @lanhel.

@Ianhel

Ok, post spirit world is before resurrection then after resurrection is final judgment and after final judgment is either 1 of the 4: Celestial, Terrestrial, Telestial or Outer Darkness, This is what Mormons call the plan of salvation.

BTW, I am fascinated to know who the person was that died, went there and witnessed all that, then came back and related all this to JS?

Yes, the individuals that get exaltation are those that were sealed by marriage in the temple and you forgot to mention those that were entered through baptism of the dead can also be resurrected by a priesthood holder and live like Gods and Goddesses (D&C 132: 1-66).

Please, read and ponder with an open mind

(D&C 132: 53-66).

I agree this is not appropriate for this discussion. I apologize if I sound irritated, I just feel for you and all the Mormon members. I don’t do twitter and frankly I don’t have the time to meet in person, but what I will do is pray for you Ianhel, I always keep the Mormon members in my prayers. Please don’t pray for me. God Bless!
