Today, the board of directors of Sutherland Institute announced that, effective January 1, 2026, Rick Larsen will become president emeritus at Sutherland. Under the leadership of the new president, Rick will continue to offer strategic support to the Sutherland team. The board has initiated a transition process to select a new president and CEO, as Sutherland’s work continues across all fronts.
“Leading Sutherland Institute has been an honor,” Larsen said. “My interaction with elected representatives, community leaders, and citizens committed to principled public policy has been inspiring. And the Sutherland team is, to a person, the most capable and committed group of professionals that I have ever had the privilege of working with. I look forward to continuing to support the organization as it equips policymakers and citizens to advance principled public policy.”
“Under Rick’s leadership, Sutherland has elevated its role as a state and national leader on a number of policy issues and established a strong brand among American thought leaders as a high-impact organization,” said board Chair Brent Andrewsen. “During his tenure, the Institute has strengthened the foundations of our constitutional republic by measurably improving protections for religious freedom and free elections, elevating the institution of the family in policy debates, empowering parents as decision makers in the education and care of their children, and securing reforms that will advance opportunity and upward mobility in Utah and beyond. Sutherland’s essential role in state and national policy, its stability, and future has never been more secure.”
“This is not retirement,” explained Larsen. “This is a transition that allows the flexibility to focus on a personal health challenge. My passion for this work remains strong, and I will continue to support the Institute’s mission and a new chapter of leadership. The times we live in constantly remind us that Sutherland is more vital to our state and nation than ever before.”
