The Utah AANHPI Democratic Legislative Caucus released the following statement following a post shared by President Donald Trump targeting China and India and their immigrant communities:
“The decision by President Trump to amplify statements describing China and India as “hellholes” and questioning the integration of their immigrants is as offensive as it is dangerous, and a reckless use of a global platform to dehumanize entire communities. Such rhetoric is deeply hypocritical, given that the United States depends on these nations for the economic stability, manufacturing, and innovation that fuel nearly every sector of our society. Beyond their measurable contributions, they are human beings who bring a richness of culture, wisdom, and dignity to our state and nation.
“Asian American communities have sacrificed their lives for our country, even while enduring generations of exclusion, violence, and discrimination. By legitimizing this language, the President directly endangers millions of people, many of whom are U.S. citizens, who now face an increased risk of harassment, bullying, and hate crimes. This rhetoric is a direct assault on the safety and belonging of our communities. We will do all we can to protect the rights and dignity of our communities, and we call on our fellow Utahns and Americans to reject false narratives that dehumanize people of color and immigrants.”
