UVU rodeo team qualifies for College National Finals Rodeo

Utah Valley University’s (UVU) rodeo team has secured multiple qualifications for the upcoming College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), scheduled for June 14–20, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming.

The UVU Women’s Rodeo Team earned the title of Rocky Mountain Region Reserve Women’s Team Champions, ensuring their place at the CNFR. Individually, Cooper Duffin clinched the Rocky Mountain Region Championship in tie-down roping, with teammate Trey Stembridge finishing as runner-up; both will compete in tie-down roping at the national event. Additionally, Sadie Mendenhall secured the barrel racing title, and Ashley Barratt qualified as the Reserve Champion in goat tying.

“Qualifying for the CNFR is the result of effort and discipline throughout the entire season,” said Shane Draper, UVU Rodeo coach. “Our athletes have demonstrated consistency, focus, and a strong commitment to preparation, both individually and as a team. This group takes pride in representing UVU, competing at a high level within a very competitive region. Earning multiple national qualifications reflects the standards they hold themselves to and the work they have put in throughout the year.”

UVU’s Spring 2026 Rodeo on April 24 and 25 was the final qualifying rodeo for CNFR in the Rocky Mountain Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. The rodeo was themed around military appreciation, with Saturday featuring an Apache helicopter flyover, two Humvees on display, and over 500 members of our military community. 8000 people attended in person, while 6500 people tuned into the livestream.

The CNFR is the premier event in college rodeo, bringing together over 400 top collegiate athletes from across the nation to compete in various events, including bareback riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, bull riding, goat tying, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, and tie-down roping.

UVU Rodeo is currently fundraising to build a permanent rodeo facility in Payson, Utah. This new arena will improve the program and community outreach. To learn more about UVU’s rodeo teams and their fundraising efforts, please visit uvu.edu/rodeo
