Swallow’s Fate

By Bryan Schott
Last week, House Republicans voted to investigate Attorney General John Swallow. We asked our readers and “Political Insiders” to ruminate on what Swallow’s ultimate fate might be. Check out our results and some anonymous comments after the jump.

Selected anonymous comments:

The evidence will not support impeachment.

Swallow will remain in office as long as he can but I believe he will eventually have to resign.

Swallow will resign and then be prosecuted along with Mark Shurtleff.

John Swallow is part of the good ole boys club. Unless convicted by feds, he will remain.

Swallow has trouble swallowing his pride (pun intended). He will hold out until impeachment looks certain.

I don’t think the Utah legislature will make any changes in the AG’s office. This is all just charade of government accountability to restore the public trust. Just don’t look behind the curtain.

John Swallow is an embarrassment to the Attorney General’s Office, to the State of Utah, and to the Republican Party. I’m glad I did not vote for him. I strongly encourage the Legislature to do the right thing and take action to have him removed from office.

John Swallow will not leave office voluntarily under any circumstances. He will have to be removed from office. Get ready for a long ugly ride for the State of Utah.

If all the allegations are true, the pressure to resign will be great as the legislature begins the impeachment process.

Although it would be best if he resigned, he is arrogant and ego-driven enough that he won’t do what’s best for the state.

House will eventually vote to impeach “to restore public trust to the office.” Swallow will then resign, still proclaiming his innocence.

John Swallow will never resign. He’s too cocky and stubborn to actually do what’s right.

This will be a long, drawn out process. The public is already sick of it but thinks that the actions by the House means he’s gone.

He is a goner. I have personally met with one of his accusers and can tell you there is more to come.

This whole proceeding is a witch hunt.

The outcome of the investigation depends upon the facts. If any truth is found in the allegations, impeachment will surely follow. But hopefully impeachment will be the result of solid evidence rather than mere accusations.

Either the impeachment proceedings will be announced or criminal charges will be filed, and THEN Swallow will resign once the writing in the wall has been carved instead. He will still try and claim he’s only doing it for the public’s sake.

Swallow has proved that he is willing to hang on no matter what. I think the Legislature will have to go the distance to get the guy out of office.

I believe that Mr. Swallow will likely refuse to resign until forced out by either impeachment, indictment, criminal charges, ethics violations etc., etc., etc., delivered to him by DOJ, County Attorneys, Lt. Governor’s Office, Utah Bar, Utah Legislature, or …… take your pick from as yet unnamed investigators/complaintants.

Who knows whether ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ were committed, but the case for ‘malfeasance’ (especially as it pertains to a violation of the public trust) seems pretty clear cut. If legislators don’t act, the Swallow Stench will soon attach itself to them, as well.

He’ll resign but only after much stubborn, ignorant delay. The man has no moral center, so he probably doesn’t even know he’s done wrong. But he’ll finally be forced to resign to “spare his family and the office of the AG from this unnecessary witch hunt.”

It’s impeachment light. He is in such denial. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had to be impeached. He really knows how to disassociate himself from his actions. This isn’t an investigation to determine criminal conduct. I think even this is lost on him. It’s to determine public trust. And that is long gone.

You can only wake up to the Tribune like this for two months.

It is pretty clear that the legislature doesn’t want to be the ones to do it, but Swallow will not resign and he will force their hand. They’ll do the investigation and take forever, hoping for the Feds or some other investigation to happen first and let them off the hook, but finally they’ll have to do their jobs and kick his lying, cheating, scheming, unethical ass out of office.

He will NEVER give in! Like so many others, I think he honestly believes he hasn’t done anything wrong. Just ask him… Of course, if Swallow is replaced…who will it be? Will Utah be any better for it???

This will be a long drawn out process that will be challenged legally at every turn. In the end the legislatures decision won’t matter as any court Swallow takes this to will side with him that the AG’s office hasn’t suffered and low popularity isn’t a reason to impeach.

Once Swallow finds a job out of state, he will resign. The Rs could save all of us a lot of “storm and thunder” by helping him get a job.

Has that man no decency at all??
