Special Session Approves Measures Restricting Drones and Funds to Lure a Facebook Data Center

Utah State Capitol 11Utah lawmakers approved a raft of legislation on Wednesday in their third special session of 2016.

Among the measures given the thumb’s up by legislators include:

  • Giving fire officials the ability to “neutralize” drones flying over wildfires, which often hinders firefighting efforts.
  • A tax break for certain data centers, a move designed to lure Facebook to build a dedicated center in Utah. UtahPolicy.com broke the news of the proposal earlier this week, and detailed how lawmakers killed the proposal during the January regular session.
  • Committing $10 million toward building a new 10,000 seat stadium at the Utah Fairpark. Another $3 million would come from the LDS Church for the facility.
