Looks Like the 2020 Redistricting Battle is Already Underway

Even though the 2020 redistricting efforts are still four years away, liberal PAC Emily’s List is already trying to boost Democrats in statehouses across the country.

Morning Consult reports the political action committee is spending $1 million this year to help Democratic women win legislative races during the 2016 cycle.

Jessica O’Connell, the executive director of EMILY’s List, said Republicans have used gerrymandering to draw districts that are “artificially red.”

“We will work over the next three election cycles to ensure more state legislative chambers are controlled by Democrats,” she said, noting that all but 29 of the country’s 98 state legislative chambers are held by the GOP.

This year, the group plans to support aspiring state senators in Colorado, Maine, Nevada and New Hampshire, and prospective state representatives in Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada and New Mexico. By 2020, the group is hoping to flip chambers in Florida, Georgia, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.
