Sen. Mike Lee says the media may be overhyping what appears to be a growing rift between the Tea Party elements of the GOP and establishment Republicans.
Lee tells Utah Policy that recent comments by Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urging Republicans to fight back against “Tea Party nonsense” don’t necessarily mean the Kentucky Republican is against the Tea Party movement.
“You’ll have to ask Sen. McConnell exactly what he meant by those comments, but I don’t think he’s saying the grassroots conservative movement is something he opposes. I don’t see what he said as an attack on all conservatives in the party, he wouldn’t say that.”
Lee says he doesn’t see a growing divide between the grassroots and more mainstream Republicans, rather a divide between incumbents and those who would oppose their re-election.
