Salt Lake County Democrats to pick new County Sheriff on Saturday

Salt Lake County Democrats will pick a successor for Sheriff Jim Winder this Saturday.

Winder left the Salt Lake County post to take a job as the new police chief of Moab.

The roughly 1,100 members of the Salt Lake County Democratic Central Committee will meet at the Salt Lake Community College Miller Campus located at 9732 South 300 West in Sandy. The election takes place at 9 am.

There are five candidates vying to replace Winder and fill the remainder of his term in office:

When the voting begins, if a candidate gets 60% support in the first round, they win. If not, then the top two vote getters from the first round advance to the next round where a simple majority will win.

The winning candidate will be forwarded to the Salt Lake County Council, who will confirm the pick. The winner will serve out the remainder of Winder’s term. The office is up for election in 2018.
