Sen. John Valentine, chair of the Senate Rules Committee, says Utah lawmakers may be considering a record number of bills in 2014.
Valentine, who has been on Utah’s Capitol Hill for 26 years, says the crush of legislation is unprecedented.
“I’m one of the few people who spent the first week reading those bills because I have to assign them,” says Valentine. “It’s a real challenge this year because we’ve had so many coming so fast.”
But this is understandable because it’s an election year, and lawmakers are conscious of the fact they will be facing voters in November.
“We saw this coming. It’s the second year of a two year cycle. We always see a lot of bills because of an election. It just seems worse every year.”
