- 1871 – the National Rifle Association receives its charter from New York State.
- 1907 – Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory join to form Oklahoma, which is admitted as the 46th state.
- 1914 – Intended to serve as a “lender of last resort,” the New York Fed opened for business.
- 1933 – The United States established diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union.
- 1973 – President Richard Nixon signs the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act into law, authorizing the construction of the Alaska Pipeline.
- 2000 – President Bill Clinton became the first U.S. president to visit Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War.
