Rep. Chris Stewart said Monday morning he’s pleased the government shutdown is over, but he’s pessimistic that Republicans and Democrats will be able to come to any sort of agreement over funding for border security.
“The Democrats promised us if we opened up the government they would negotiate with us,” said Stewart on Fox News. “So far it’s been going from ‘no’ to ‘hell no.'”
Stewart says he does not think the coming negotiations over a funding measure to avoid another government shutdown next month will be fruitful. Stewart pointed to the failure of a funding proposal to provide billions for the border in exchange for protecting the children of undocumented immigrants from deportation.
“Here is the truth. The Democrat party has made it very clear they don’t care about border security,” he said. “I would argue go to the Hispanic community and say look, the Democrat party has said they don’t care about Dreamers. We had an opportunity to give structure and some security to these 800,000 individuals and Democratic leadership turned away from that.”
