Stewart says Democrats are ‘desperate’ to find something they can use against Trump in impeachment inquiry

Rep. Chris Stewart says there’s “an awful lot of fury” coming from Democrats in the investigation into President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, but he continues to question whether it’s worthy of impeachment.

Stewart said Wednesday on Fox News that Democrats are not bringing any sense of fairness to the process as they continue to probe whether President Trump urged a foreign government to investigate a political rival.

“Democrats have literally been trying to impeach him since the day he was elected,” said Stewart. “They are desperate to find something, anything. Are you going to remove the president over one sentence in one telephone conversation with a foreign leader? I think they know they’ve got to have more than that.”

According to a readout of a telephone call between President Trump and the president of Ukraine released by the White House, Trump appeared to urge his counterpart to investigate a debunked conspiracy theory about former Vice President Joe Biden.

On Tuesday, the inspector general for the State Department requested an “urgent” breifing about documents related to the State Department and Ukraine. Stewart said he did not expect to learn much new from that briefing.

“I just think at the end of the day the American people are going to roll their eyes at much of what they’re seeing,” he said.
