Romney isn’t buying Trump’s excuse for asking China to investigate Biden

Sen. Mitt Romney said Friday that President Donald Trump’s call for China to investigate former vice president Joe Biden was “politically motivated” and the remarks were “wrong and appalling.”

On Thursday, President Trump said during a Q&A with reporters that China should investigate the business dealings of former vice president Joe Biden. The comments came amid the impeachment furor surrounding Trump’s dealings with Ukraine where he repeatedly urged that country’s president to investigate Biden’s son Hunter.

Trump contends that he is asking foreign countries to investigate the Bidens as part of a campaign to root out corruption, but Romney says he doesn’t believe that explanation.

“When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for China’s investigation is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process, it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated. By all appearances, the President’s brazen and unprecedented appeal to China and to Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden is wrong and appalling,” said Romney in a statement.

House Democrats have opened an impeachment inquiry into Trump because of his interactions with the president of Ukraine.
