Former Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon is officially seeking the nomination for chairman of the Utah Democratic Party.
As first reported by Utah Policy, Corroon is in the race to replace Sen. Jim Dabakis, who resigned suddenly for health reasons.
“A one party system is not healthy for government. It limits the exchange of ideas and leads to complacency and corruption,” said Corroon. “My goal is to move the political pendulum in our state back to the center by strengthening our Democratic Party-county by county.”
That statement echoes Gov. Howard Dean’s “50 State Strategy” when he was head of the Democratic National Committee. Corroon is Dean’s cousin.
Corroon was the Democratic nominee for governor in 2010.
BYU professor Richard Davis is also in the running for party chair.
Democratic delegates will elect the next party chair at their state convention on April 26.
