Democrat Janice Fisher’s retirement left future control of this seat up in the air. Now that the nominating dust has settled, this seat should remain in the Democratic column.
Republican Fred Cox is making another run at this seat after losing to Fisher by 356 votes in 2012. He has a formidable opponent in Democrat Mike Lee (not the U.S. Senator), who is an officer with the Unified Police Department and vice president of the Utah AFL-CIO. Labor has been a powerful ally for Utah Democrats in the past, and having one of their leaders standing for office should give Lee a good base of support.
A number of Republicans we talk to say they think Lee has the inside track on winning this seat.
