On Monday, Sen. Mitt Romney proposed giving $1,000 to every adult in America as a way to shore up the economy during the COVID-19 outbreak.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Romney said the Senate should act quickly to pass the relief package from the House, but more action is needed to assist families and small businesses.
“Every American adult should immediately receive a one-time check for $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” said Romney.

The Hill reports Romney’s office said the $1,000 payouts are not unprecedented during financial upheaval.
“Congress took similar action during the 2001 and 2008 recessions. While expansions of paid leave, unemployment insurance, and SNAP benefits are crucial, the check will help fill the gaps for Americans that may not quickly navigate different government options,” Romney’s office noted.
Romney also proposed grants from the Small Business Administration to help companies cover payroll and avoid bankruptcies. Additionally, Romney said student loan payments should be deferred for a period of time and insurance plans should be required to cover telehealth for COVID-19 services.
